Among the ancient rocks, modern-day Inca took on their ancestors's roles as kings, countries, provincial chiefs, and warriors to call Inti. the Inca sun god, back to the southern skies.
Accompanied by mules and llamas to carry our packs, we begin our hike up to the Andean community of Quishuarani (3700m.) where we have a stunning view of the snow-capped peak, Colque Cruz (5700m.). Enjoying the sights around us, we see villagers herding their sheep and llamas appearin on the hills. Slowly hiking upward, we camped next to turquoise lake.
DAY 2: QUISHUARANI - CANCHA CANCHA
We enjoyed the small Andean community of Quishuarani and the waterfalls following an original Inca stone path. As we reach the Pachacutec mountain pass (4500m.), we have spectacular views of the snow-caped peaks of Pitusiray (5750m.) and Chicon (5500m.). We can see the Suirococha lagoon located next to the village of Cancha Cancha (3800).
DIA 3: CANCHA CANCHA - OLLANTAYTAMBO - MACHUPICCHU
The last day hiking from the village of Cancha Cancha, includes passing thatched-roof stone houses and pastoral farmlands. The trail comes out at Sayhuapata (2800m.), from where we took the transport that took us to the legendary Inca town of Ollantay Tambo. After the lunch we took the train to Aguas Calientes.
.DIA 4: MACHUPICCHU
We leave early in the morning to take the bus from Aguans Calientes, a 20 min. ride to Machu Picchu. We got there before the dawn to see the spectacular weak up of the mystic Machu Picchu. The next big thing to do is to climb the mountain of Hayna Picchu that overlooks the ruins.
Tips
Adjust to the altitude - We suggest stay in Cusco (3,400m/11,150ft) at least 2 nights before the Lares trek departure. During these days you can take other extra activities.
International Flight Note - If at all possible, book your international flight so it arrives in Lima, 4-6am (check with your local travel agent). This is because most Lima-Cusco flights leave between 6am and 2pm. It would give you an extra day in Cusco to acclimatize and save the cost of an overnight stay in Lima. Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays are preferable as it's easier to coordinate local "Cusco day activities"
